Crystal growing methods

From Crystal growing

Slow evaporation

Leave solution to natrually stand and water/other solvent to evaporate.

Solution cooling

Most compounds more soluble when heated. Prepare hot saturated solution, allow to cool, and crystals will grow in supersaturated solution as solubility drops.

Complex formation

Two very soluble compounds may form complex less soluble than parent, such as all alums. Crystals of such complex will form if saturated solutions of reactants mix.

Impact of crystallisation speed

Growth is mostly polycrystalline mass when rapidly crystallised but monocrystalline when slow. Slower crystal growth also improves crystal clarity. Also, fast growth of prisms will produce long needles.
