Description

Organic coordination complex, salt of transitional metal aluminum, alkaline metal sodium and organic oxalic acid. From water solutions crystallizes as pentahydrate.

Reaction between metal aluminum, sodium hydroxide and oxalic acid.

Chemical equation:

2Al + 6NaOH + 6H2C2O4 = 2Na3[Al(C2O4)3] + 6H2O + ЗН2↑


For preparation of 100.00g of sodium trioxalatoaluminate pentahydrate а 5.99g of aluminum, 26.66g of sodium hydroxide and 84.03g of oxalic acid dihydrate is required.

Add alkali solution to the flask, then add aluminum pieces, shavings or powder and stir it until gas emission will stop.Add to the flask with oxalic acid a aluminum in alkali solution with stirring. After reaction will stop, filter the solution and use it for crystal growing.

Chemical equation:

Al(OH)3 + 3NaHC2O4 = Na3[Al(C2O4)3] + 3H2O


For preparation of 100.00g of sodium trioxalatoaluminate pentahydrate а 17.33g of aluminum hydroxide and 86.67g of sodium hydrooxalate monohydrate is required.

Add to the flask with aluminum hydroxide solution a hot sodium hydrooxalate solution with stirring. After reaction will stop, filter the solution and use it for crystal growing.

Chemical equation:

2Al(OH)3 + 3Na2C2O4 + 3H2C2O4 = 2Na3[Al(C2O4)3] + 6H2O


For preparation of 100.00g of sodium trioxalatoaluminate pentahydrate а 17.33g of aluminum hydroxide, 50.66g of sodium oxalate monohydrate and 42.01g of oxalic acid dihydrate is required.

Add to the flask with aluminum hydroxide solution a hot sodium oxalate and oxalic acid solution with stirring. After reaction will stop, filter the solution and use it for crystal growing.

Acidic solutions lead to growing flat plates.

For crystal storing use hermetic vessel with wadding moistened with such solution near the crystal. You can use such alternatives as vessel with vaseline or vegetable oil, organic non-hygroscopic solvent (kerosene or liquid paraffin). Also you can use acrylate polymer or another kinds of solidifying plastic.
