Description
Organic compound, salt of alkaline metal sodium and saccharin. Sweetener, ~300 times sweeter than sugar. From water solutions crystallizes as dihydrate.
Can be bought in grocery store (sweeteners based on sodium cyclamate, mixture of 90% of sodium cyclamate and 10% of sodium saccharinate) and online store.
Recrystallization of mixture of sodium cyclamate and sodium saccharinate
Add mixture of sodium cyclamate and sodium saccharinate to the flask with boiling water until solution become saturated. Then filter out the solution and cool slowly. Excess of sodium cyclamate forms a crystalline precipitate, when most of sodium saccharinate remain in the solution.
Separate this precipitate from the stock solution, add another portion of mixture, and repeat this process several times, using the same solution again and again. At the end, you'll get a precipitated sodium cyclamate and solution with accumulated sodium saccharinate.
Reaction between acid saccharin and sodium hydroxide, carbonate or hydrocarbonate
Chemical equation:
100.00g of sodium saccharinate dihydrate а 75.95g of saccharin and 16.58g of sodium hydroxide or 21.97g of sodium carbonate or 34.83g of sodium hydrocarbonate is required.Add acid to the flask, then add small parts of sodium compound with stirring until it will totally dissolve or, if you use carbonate, until carbon dioxide emission will stop.
Notes
Both sodium saccharin and acid saccharin can be referred as "saccharin". But in most cases this name means sodium saccharin, as it has much higher solubility in water.
Dehydrates in several days.
For crystal storing use hermetic vessel with wadding moistened with such solution near the crystal. You can use such alternatives as vessel with vaseline or vegetable oil, organic non-hygroscopic solvent (kerosene or liquid paraffin). Also you can use acrylate polymer or another kinds of solidifying plastic.
