Description

Organic coordination комплекс, salt of transitional metal iron, alkaline metal sodium and organic oxalic acid. From water solutions crystallizes as pentahydrate.

Chemical equation:

FeCl3 + 6NaOH + 3H2C2O4 = Na3[Fe(C2O4)3] + 3NaCl + 6H2O
FeCl3 + 3Na2CO3 + 3H2C2O4 = Na3[Fe(C2O4)3] + 3NaCl + 3H2O + 3CO2
FeCl3 + 6NaHCO3 + 3H2C2O4 = Na3[Fe(C2O4)3] + 3NaCl + 6H2O + 3CO2

For preparation of 100.00g of sodium trioxalatoferrate(III) pentahydrate а 56.44g of iron(III) chloride hexahydrate, 50.11g of sodium hydroxide or 66.39g of sodium carbonate or 105.24g of sodium hydrocarbonate and 78.96g of oxalic acid dihydrate is required.

Add to the flask with oxalic acid solution a hot iron(III) chloride solution with stirring.Add acid to the flask, then add small parts of sodium compound with stirring until heating will stop (attention, the solution may boil!) or, if you use carbonate, until carbon dioxide emission will stop. After reaction will stop, filter the solution and use it for crystal growing.

Solution contains both sodium trioxalatoferrate(III) and sodium chloride. The latter has lower solubility, and will precipitate first. Crystal system is different for these componds, so crystals will grow separately..

Chemical equation:

Fe2O3 + 6NaOH + 6H2C2O4 = 2Na3[Fe(C2O4)3] + 9H2O
Fe2O3 + 3Na2CO3 + 6H2C2O4 = 2Na3[Fe(C2O4)3] + 6H2O + 3CO2
Fe2O3 + 6NaHCO3 + 6H2C2O4 = 2Na3[Fe(C2O4)3] + 9H2O + 6CO2
Fe(OH)3 + 3NaOH + 3H2C2O4 = Na3[Fe(C2O4)3] + 6H2O
2Fe(OH)3 + 3Na2CO3 + 6H2C2O4 = 2Na3[Fe(C2O4)3] + 9H2O + 3CO2
Fe(OH)3 + 3NaHCO3 + 3H2C2O4 = Na3[Fe(C2O4)3] + 6H2O + 3CO2

For preparation of 100.00g of sodium trioxalatoferrate(III) pentahydrate а 16.67g of iron(III) oxide or 22.31g of iron(III) hydroxide, 25.05g of sodium hydroxide or 33.19g of sodium carbonate or 52.62g of sodium hydrocarbonate and 78.96g of oxalic acid dihydrate is required.

Add acid to the flask, then add small parts of iron compound with stirring until it will totally dissolve .Add acid to the flask, then add small parts of sodium compound with stirring until heating will stop (attention, the solution may boil!) or, if you use carbonate, until carbon dioxide emission will stop. After reaction will stop, filter the solution and use it for crystal growing.

Chemical equation:

Fe2O3 + 6NaHC2O4 = 2Na3[Fe(C2O4)3] + 3H2O
Fe(OH)3 + 3NaHC2O4 = Na3[Fe(C2O4)3] + 3H2O

For preparation of 100.00g of sodium trioxalatoferrate(III) pentahydrate а 16.67g of iron(III) oxide or 22.31g of iron(III) hydroxide and 81.45g of sodium hydrooxalate monohydrate is required.

Add to the flask with iron(III) compounds solution a hot sodium hydrooxalate solution with stirring. After reaction will stop, filter the solution and use it for crystal growing.

Chemical equation:

Fe2O3 + 3Na2C2O4 + 3H2C2O4 = 2Na3[Fe(C2O4)3] + 3H2O
2Fe(OH)3 + 3Na2C2O4 + 3H2C2O4 = 2Na3[Fe(C2O4)3] + 6H2O

For preparation of 100.00g of sodium trioxalatoferrate(III) pentahydrate а 16.67g of iron(III) oxide or 22.31g of iron(III) hydroxide, 47.61g of sodium oxalate monohydrate and 39.48g of oxalic acid dihydrate is required.

Add to the flask with iron(III) compounds solution a hot sodium oxalate and oxalic acid solution with stirring. After reaction will stop, filter the solution and use it for crystal growing.

Notes

Direct sunlight or other sources of ultravioler radiation lead to solution changing color from green to yellow, and also lead crystals to shatter. So solution and crystals should be stored in dark place.

For crystal storing use hermetic vessel with wadding moistened with such solution near the crystal. You can use such alternatives as vessel with vaseline or vegetable oil, organic non-hygroscopic solvent (kerosene or liquid paraffin). Also you can use acrylate polymer or another kinds of solidifying plastic.
